The Shepherd’s Song by Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers

This is a story of second chances and how one piece of paper will change the lives of 12 people forever!

Kate McConnell wonders if she has done enough with her life. She questions if she could have done more. She had written a series of Bible verses onto a piece of paper in neat handwriting and with love. Her son has walked away from God and she wants to encourage him to return to Him. She had placed the piece of paper in the pocket of his coat. That morning she had a number of errands to run and dinner to take to a friend. She had gone to the grocery store, dropped off the clothes at the dry cleaners, had run lunch over to a friends house, and for some reason was on her way back to the dry cleaners when the roads got really treacherous from a winter storm that was descending upon the area. She wakes up and wonders where she is. She is on the way to the hospital and not in good condition. The EMT tells her what happened and she fades in and out.

In the mean time one of the articles of clothing is her son’s coat with the verses of the 23rd Psalm. One of the employees discovers it and reads it and decides to wear this young man’s coat home. In the process the wind takes the Psalms 23 verses with a gust of wind and eventually makes it into the hands of a new person who either shares it with another or it gets dropped or blown away. Each person that reads the verses realizes one of the lines of the verses is speaking to them and what they are experiencing. It starts a transformation in their lives and their return to God. At the very end of the book, I will not tell you what happens and ruin it all for you, but the handwritten Psalms returns to the hands of the person it was intended for and changes his life as well. The book hops around first telling each person’s encounter with the piece of paper, but later ties up the story of each person who encountered it. It is an enjoyable read.

It is written by two sisters and they usually write children’s books, but they decided to write an adult book. This book is not gender based! Words can transform a life, they can also injure and destroy a life as well and the words in the Bible are healing and can transform you if you are open to receiving what it is saying to you. If you do not understand what the verse(s) mean, seek out someone who is solid in Bible teaching and they will direct you and help you understand it.

Psalms 23

The Lord is my Shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through
the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Two Book Giveaway…

I love to sign up for book giveaways and have won some along the way since I started doing this about 4-5 years ago. I rarely ever win anything else I sign up for, so it is always a blessing to receive an email stating I won a book giveaway and since I love books – it is a big treat!

Here is a book giveaway – it is in the time era of WWII and it is a new author I have never heard of or read, so I signed up for it. I am posting the giveaway information below so you can go and leave a comment and read the interview of the author and read some about the books he is giving away. They sound like good reads and I truly like to read anything set in the time era of WWII. There are so many stories that come from that era. I had an uncle who served and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and he shared his experiences with me once and ever since I have been interested in reading and learning more about what happened during that long, tragic war.

Under the Cajun Moon, by Mindy Starns Clark

Under the Cajun Moon, by Minday Starns Clark

New Orleans may be known as the “Big Easy,” but none of it was easy for Chole Ledet, international business etiquette expert. She left New Orleans, her parents, and their famous French Quarter restaurant behind. She learns that her father has been shot and she rushes back home to be by his side and handle his affairs. She soon finds herself being charged with murdering her father’s lawyer, his best friend, but she learns of long hidden secrets that changes all she knew to be true about her and her family and is not sure she can trust anyone.

A person from her past helps lead her on a search for priceless treasure that is part of the roots of Louisiana, but can she trust him or will this only put her in greater danger? Can she learn to lean on God or will this drive her further away from His love and grace?

This story keeps you guessing to the end about who is behind the murders and disappearances of people dear to her family. It has history all the way from France to the first settlers on American soil. A full, enjoyable read and loved how it kept me wondering who was behind it all until the last 3-4 chapters of the book. It was difficult to leave this book lie until I had time to come back to it. If you like mysteries, you would enjoy this book!

After her husband leaves her and their two kids she struggles to put her sorrow into words when she returns to Sunset for a vacation. When she visits the mailbox on the beach memories surface of her first love, Campbell Forrester and the rejection she experienced from him. When Campbell comes back into her life, Lindsay must decide whether to trust in love again or guard herself from greater pain. She prays and asks God to show her what to do. She and Campbell are given a second chance, but can they both come to terms with what happened in the past and move beyond it.

The Mailbox is a real landmark on the coast of North Carolina.

This was an enjoyable read and one I would pass on to others. It is a story about forgiving the hurts of the past, having faith to move ahead and the beauty of second chances. This was the first book I had read of Marybeth Whalen’s, but I would enjoy reading this authors future writings.

To Heaven and Back by Mary C. Neal, MD

I found this book at my sister’s consignment store and it is about a doctor’s extraordinary account of her death, Heaven, Angels, and life again – based on a true story of what has happened in her life and what her purpose on earth is.

She speaks of her faith when a teenager and the many times God seemed to intervene over the years after getting out of high school and going into medical school for her studies in orthopedics and then to become an orthopedic surgeon. She admits she is cynical and skeptical and maybe that is why she experienced so many times where she encountered angels, her short time in heaven, and many other occurrences that she felt God was close by and intervening.

She wondered why she was brought back to life, which I am sure we would all question that since Heaven is wonderful, but she knows now that God had reasons why she was to be here and she shares those in the book. I have experienced times in my life where I know God was with me and saved my life or was a presence to encourage me and know He is never far away, but always present by my side whether it is He himself or guardian angels.

I enjoyed this book and I do believe that miracles are still performed today, not just something that happened while Jesus walked the earth. Mary dispels the myths that there is definitely life after death.

I watched a documentary the other evening about Life after Death and they spoke only from a scientific point of view and rarely was God’s name mentioned. I was truly saddened by the lack of a connection with God these people had following their experience in heaven – many would say they saw the Mother Mary, others would say it was strictly angels, and only 1 or 2 people stated it was a higher power. I was surprised after their near death experiences that they did not have more of a desire to pursue God. And rarely do you ever hear of the stories of people who had near death experiences who did not see the light, but just darkness. I know there are people out there who have experienced that, but I think most people do not share those because no one wants to believe there is a Hell that people will go to, but in the Bible it states in Revelation 20:15
“And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.” And again in:
Matthew 13:41–42
“The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Satan will deceive many in believing there is no hell, but he is lying. I am sure he already knows that will be his fate along with the false prophet.
Revelation 20:10
“… and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

This book by Mary C. Neal, MD is a good one and I found it difficult to leave it lie. I have attached a copy of the front of the book here for your viewing. If you read this book – may it forever touch your life!

The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman by Carole Brown

This book written by Carole Brown kept me interested throughout and it was very difficult to lay it down.

Caralynne Hayman is angry and bitter over the abuse and death of her 11-yr-old daughter at the hands of a radical religious cult – The Children of Righteous Cain. When her husband, who is one of the co-founders suffers a massive heart attack, she allows him to die. Caralynne has had enough of the control and abuse she has received at the hands of her husband and others in the group. She begins to rebel and not care about what the elders say or think of her.

She believes no one will learn of her secret, until a former friend Dayne McFarland returns as the pastor and learns the truth about the cult. He begins to investigate and his rekindled friendship with Caralynne lead them to eventually have a confrontation with the leaders of the cult. It keeps you wondering what will happen next! Step into the world of a cult and see just how manipulative, deceptive, and abusive they become in order to control the people who join the cult. Learn how they uncover this cult and reveal its dark secrets and lies and the ages of the children they begin to indoctrinate into their organization.

These kinds of things do happen in our world today. I have met someone who was in a cult and he still has issues to this day from the mess they made of his life.

A truly great story of someones life in a cult. A great book and one that keeps you intrigued to the end!
